Debuting in 1997 as a one-on-one weapons-based fighter, Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors (a sub-series of the larger Warriors series) quickly evolved as a go-to franchise for large-scale hack-and-slash warfare. Since the release of Dynasty Warriors 2 in 2000 there have been eight main series games (excluding the original but including 2017's Dynasty Warriors 9) along with 13 standalone expansions (titles that introduce new modes, gameplay features and so on) and 12 hack-and-slash spin-offs, primarily for hand-helds and mobiles – a total of 33 games. The games are set in an historical China and are a spin-off of Koei's turn-based strategy Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, which in turn is inspired by the Chinese historical text Records of the Three Kingdoms.

Dynasty Warriors is part of the Warriors meta-series, which is the most prolific hack-and-slash videogame metaseries, with more than 70 titles. In addition to the Dynasty Warriors games, the meta-series also includes games for Fist of the North Star and Gundam. There are also non-hack-and-slash spin-offs from the Dynasty Warriors franchise including a mah-jong game.
