On 11 December 1987, CRL's text adventure Jack the Ripper became the first videogame to be granted an "18" age-rating by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The game is based on the unsolved serial killer murders that afflicted London's East End in the late 19th century. The player starred as a suspect wrongly accused of the crimes, desperate to clear his name. Although its gameplay was text-based, the game featured gory animated images. Retailer WHSmith reportedly refused to stock the title as a consequence of the unprecedented age-rating.

A year before Jack the Ripper, CRL's gothic text adventure Dracula was the first videogame to be age-rated by the BBFC – in this case granted a "15" age-rating.
