As of the end of the 2016–17 season, Diego Alves (Brazil) had saved 22 penalties in La Liga, with two other efforts having missed the target. Alves has played for two clubs in the Spanish top flight: Almeria and Valencia CF. He overtook Spanish goalkeeping legend Andoni Zubizaretta with his 17th spot-kick save during a match against CD Leganés on 25 September 2016 – the first of six penalty stops during the season, itself a record.
