Following their 4–1 victory against Italy's Juventus, Spanish side Real Madrid C.F. became the first soccer team to retain the European Cup in its modern Champions League format. They won the competition in 2016 and 2017, both times under the tutelage of head coach Zinedine Zidane. The European Cup was reinvented and expanded as the Champions League in 1992–93, introducing group stages to the tournament.
