Ernest made the crossing accompanied by a small group of companions; Eric Arlington, Patricia "Patsy" Hughes, Richard Hughes, Tim Powell, and Jeri Segal, hiking down the North Kaibab Trail to the canyon floor before resting at Bright Angel Campground and climbing out via the Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim, a route covering nearly 21 miles with over 10,000 feet of combined elevation change. The full crossing took 33 hours and 45 minutes including rest stops, with roughly 15 hours of actual moving time, and along the way the group was joined partway by hiker Lanny Deremer, who had set off from the South Rim in the middle of the night to meet them.
