The classic cat-and-mouse duo was created for MGM in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. In recent years, new cartoons have been produced by Warner Bros Animation for the Cartoon Network.
The slapstick comedy of these animated short films centred on a never-ending, violent rivalry between the two main characters, who went on to have cameos in feature films (for example, with Gene Kelly in the 1945 musical Anchors Aweigh) and star in their own feature-length movies.
