On 12 March 2016, Wayde van Niekerk (South Africa) recorded a time of 9.98 seconds for the 100 m at the Free State Championships in Blomfontein, South Africa. In doing so, he became the first athlete to break three notable sprint barriers in competition: running under 10 seconds in the 100 m, under 20 seconds in the 200 m and under 44 seconds in the 400 m. Van Niekerk has a personal best of 19.94 seconds in the 200 m, and holds the world record of 43.03 seconds in the 400 m.
