The One-Day International (ODI) career of Mithali Raj (India) lasted 22 years 274 days, from 26 June 1999 to 27 March 2022. The prolific batter made 114 not out on her ODI debut against Ireland at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes, UK, when she was just 16 years 205 days old – making her the then youngest player to score a century in men’s or women’s ODIs (the record was only beaten on 11 October 2021, by Ireland’s Amy Hunter on her 16th birthday). Raj bowed out of all forms of international cricket on 27 March 2022, when India were dumped out of the 2022 edition of the ICC Women’s World Cup by South Africa in Christchurch, New Zealand. The 39-year-old announced her retirement on Twitter on 8 June 2022.
Raj’s 211 innings in an unrivalled 232 ODI matches for India included 7,805 runs (a female record) at an average of 50.68 runs per innings, with 71 50-plus scores and seven hundreds. Her highest score of 125 not out (from 143 balls) was achieved against Sri Lanka on 16 September 2018. Raj scored a combined total of 10,868 runs in Test matches (699 runs in 2002–21), Twenty20 Internationals (T20I; 2,364 runs in 2006–19) and ODIs during her career. In ODIs alone, she captained India to 89 wins from 155 matches and scored more runs (5,319) and fifties (52) than any other female ODI captain. Raj made 109 consecutive appearances for India in ODIs between April 2004 and February 2013.
