The first Winter Olympic Games – originally known as Semaine Internationale des Sports d'Hiver ("International Winter Sports Week") – were held in Chamonix, France, from 25 January to 5 February 1924. On 26 January 1924, Charles Jewtraw (USA) won the 500 m speed skating event at the Stade Olympique de Chamonix, becoming the first ever Winter Olympic gold medallist.
