Mariah Carey (USA) smashed her own streaming record for a second Christmas Eve in a row when “All I Want for Christmas Is You” racked up 17,223,237 streams worldwide on Spotify on 24 December 2020. The festive favourite had previously recorded 10,819,009 streams on 24 December 2018 and 12,028,987 streams on 24 December 2019. The latter figure made “Christmas” the most streamed track overall on Spotify in a 24-hour period – until she added 5 million plays to her own record on Christmas Eve 2020.
On 24 December 2020, three tracks simultaneously broke Mariah’s 2019 streaming record of 12,028,987: “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (17,223,237), “Last Christmas” by Wham! (15,813,799) and “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande (12,229,331). On the same day, a total of seven Christmas songs were each streamed more than 10 million times globally on Spotify, and the 18 most streamed tracks of the day were all Christmas-themed offerings – among them festive classics from Bobby Helms, Brenda Lee, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, The Ronettes, Frank Sinatra and John Lennon.
The continued popularity of Christmas songs with music streamers came as no surprise to chart-watchers, with Carey, Wham!, Brenda Lee, Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé and many others becoming regular fixtures in the upper echelons of festive countdowns in the US, UK and beyond. In December 2020, with the world in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic and many Christmas celebrations cancelled, the number of visitors to streaming services such as Spotify would have received a timely boost as people looked for ways to spend their time at home with restrictions and/or lockdowns in place.
