Although Power Drift (Sega, 1988) was the first kart-racing game, Super Mario Kart (Nintendo, 1992) was the first to incorporate combat within races, its weapons including turtle shells and banana skins. The game also featured a dedicated "Battle Mode”, in which players tried to eliminate each other in a destruction derby-style arena.
