The character of Anakin Skywalker, who famously grew up to become Darth Vader, has been played by a total of 10 actors over the course of his appearances in seven of the eight theatrically released Star Wars films to date. In Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), Darth Vader was played jointly by David Prowse (who appeared on-screen) and James Earl Jones (who provided the character’s voice), with additional contributions from stunt coordinator Bob Anderson, who stepped into Vader’s costume for the climactic lightsabre duel. All three returned for Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Episode VI – The Return of The Jedi (1983), while veteran British actor Sebastian Shaw also provided Anakin/Vader’s unmasked face during the climax to the latter film. Additionally, C. Andrew Nelson was brought in to play Darth Vader in additional scenes shot for the Special Edition re-release of Episode V in 1997. In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), the young Anakin Skywalker was played by Jake Lloyd, while Hayden Christensen took on the role in Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002). Christensen returned as Anakin in Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2004), alongside stunt-man Gene Bryant, and James Earl Jones, who once again provided the voice of Anakin’s Darth Vader persona. Jones returned as the voice of Darth Vader in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), while the character’s body was provided by both stuntman Daniel Naprous and actor Spencer Wilding.
