Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2004) remain the most visual-effects-heavy instalments in the franchise to date, with 2,200 visual effects (VFX) shots appearing in each. This compares with 2,100 VFX shots in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015), and 1,700 in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). Ironically, Episode III is the only Star Wars film to date not to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Visual Effects category.
