On 10 December 2014, an international team of scientists, led by the Five Gyres Institute (USA), published their first of three research papers in which they estimate the total amount of plastic in all the world’s oceans. Using a combination of beach surveys, sample-taking across 24 expeditions and computer modelling, they estimated that there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the oceans. In total around 268,940 tons of plastic are floating on the surface and there are approximately four billion plastic microfibres per km² on the ocean floor.
