The most penalty shoot-out defeats in the football Copa America by a team is five by Argentina in 1995, 2004, 2011, 2015 and 2016.
Argentina suffered their first penalty shoot-out defeat against Brazil in the 1995 quarter finals. They would lose to the same opponent in the 2004 final. In 2011, they lost on home soil to Uruguay at the quarter-final stage and most recently lost back-to-back finals against Chile.
Lionel Messi is the only player to have taken part in all three of the most recent shoot-outs, scoring twice and missing one (2016).
Ironically, Argentina have the record for the most penalty shootout victories in the FIFA World Cup.
