Most selfie deaths by country

The country in which most people have died while taking a selfie is India, which accounts for 59.8% of all selfie-related deaths according to research published by Hemank Lamba (India/USA) et al at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA, in November 2016. At the time of publication, there had been 127 so-called "killfies" reported by the media since March 2014.

The research paper is entitled "Me, Myself and My Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths". It identifies the risk factors involved in taking selfies and attempts to provide guidelines for taking a safer selfie.

Selfies account for a greater number of deaths than shark attacks for the same period.
