What began as an indie sports game riffing on soccer and destruction derbies has developed into a bona-fide eSports favourite, with a major Rocket League competition, the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS), now hosted by its developer Psyonix twice a year. On 7 August 2016, the US team iBuyPower Cosmic, featuring the players Cameron "Kronovi" Bills (USA), Brandon "Lachinio" Lachin (Canada) and Ted "0ver Zer0" Keil (USA), were crowned the first ever RLCS World Champions. They defeated the European team FlipSid3 Tactics in the final, winning a best-of-seven series of games 4–2 and pocketing a first prize of $27,500.
