Submarine fans, also known as abyssal fans and underwater deltas, are formed by large-scale deposition of sediments from the land. The Bengal Fan covers most of the floor of the Bay of Bengal and extends out into the Indian Ocean. Formed by the deposition of sediment from the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers in Bangladesh, the Bengal Fan measures around 3,000 km by 1,000 km with a maximum thickness of 16.5 km.
