Abyssal plains cover around 40% of the ocean floor, but were not recognized as a distinct type of geographical feature until the late 1940s. They are larger and more common in the Atlantic than the Pacific or Indian Oceans. The largest single recognized abyssal plain is the Sohm Plain in the North Atlantic, which covers around 900,000 km² of ocean floor.
