Michael van Gerwen (Netherlands) recorded a three-dart average of 114.05 in beating compatriot and rival Raymond van Barneveld in the semi-final of the PDC World Championship on 1 January 2017, at Alexandra Palace in London, UK. Van Gerwen, who won the match 6–2, beat the existing mark held by Phil "The Power" Taylor (UK), who averaged 111.21 in defeating Shayne Burgess (UK) in 2002.
Incredibly, Raymond van Barneveld's three-dart average in defeat to van Gerwen was 109.34 – not only the highest average by a losing player at the PDC World Championship, but also the fourth-highest ever recorded at the event.
