The first man to win the 500 and 1,000 metres at a single Speed Skating Single Distance World Championships was Pavel Kulizhnikov (Russia) at the 2016 Single Distance World Championships held in Kolomna, Russia, on 13–14 February 2016.

Several skaters had come close to the sprint double in previous years. Hiroyasu Shimizu won 500 metre gold and 1,000 metre silver in 1999, a feat repeated by Jeremy Wotherspoon in 2004 and again by Mo Tae-Bum in 2013. Wotherspoon had won the 1,000 metre gold and 500 metre silver in 2001.

Kulizhnikov himself won 500 metre gold and 1,000 metre silver in 2015, finishing just 0.04 seconds behind Shani Davis.
