- Where
- Indonesia
- When
- May 2006
Since May 2006, a mud volcano has been erupting in East Java, Indonesia. Expelling a mixture of clay and water, rather than lava, the mud volcano and its associated "Sidoarjo mudflow" has since buried more than 6.5 km² of the city of Sidoarjo in up to 40 m of mud, displacing nearly 40,000 people. At its peak, the mud volcano was erupting around 180,000 m³ per day – although currently it is much less. The cause of the eruption is a controversial topic. Some scientists believe a blowout at a nearby natural gas well was to blame while others insist an earthquake was responsible. The eruption is expected to last for another 25–30 years.
