Although Marvel Heroes (Gazillion Entertainment, 2013) is the more well-known title, it's not actually the first MMO set in the Marvel universe. That prestige falls to the browser game Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, which was first released as open beta in April 2011, also by Gazillion. The game is based on the Hasbro Marvel Super Hero Squad action-figures, which depicted popular superheroes in a cartoonish, stunted form. Sadly, it was announced that the game would be closing its servers in early 2017.

The game featured 196 playable characters including alternate variations of key heroes such as Hulk, Iron Man, Nick Fury and Wolverine.
