The "crossing over" of franchises in gaming has been a cult phenomenon ever since the early 1990s, especially so in fighting titles with series such as Marvel vs. Capcom and Super Smash Bros. As of 15 December 2016, the longest-running series in the genre was SNK's The King of Fighters, which has produced more than 20 key titles over 21 years 364 days between its debut The King of Fighters '94 on 25 August 1994 and The King of Fighters XIV on 23 August 2016. These predominantly 2D brawlers feature characters from SNK's previous series such as the military shoot-'em-up Ikari Warriors, Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and the action-platformer Psycho Soldier.
