Reinhold Messner (Italy, b. 17 September 1944) was the first male to ascend Everest and K2 without the use of supplementary oxygen. He climbed Everest (Nepal/China, 8,848 m; 29,029 ft) on 8 May 1978 and K2 (China/Pakistan, 8,611 m; 28,251 ft) on 12 July 1979.
