The most southerly operating railway is the Southern Fuegian Railway or El Tren del Fin del Mundo ("The Train at the end of the World") in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Originally built in around 1902 to serve a prison, the line was upgraded from an oxen-hauled trackway to a 60-cm-gauge (1-ft 11.62-in) railway suitable for use with a steam locomotive in 1910. An earthquake in 1949 left the railway unusable and after failed attempts to re-establish the line, it closed in 1952. The railway was rebuilt in 1994 to a slightly smaller track gauge of 500 mm (19.68 in) and today tourist trains run from Fin del Mundo ("End of the World") station, travelling 7 km (4.3 miles) to El Parque Nacional station in the Tierra del Fuego National Park.
