Although the first sausage-based car was the Oscar-Mayer "Wienermobile" built in 1936, it was, in fact, built from scratch rather than customised from a production car platform. Not until 1952 was the first customised car-based Wienermobile built by the Gerstenslager Company of Wooster, Ohio, USA. Using a Dodge truck chassis, the panel builders manufactured a 22-ft-long (6.7-m) representation of a hotdog on a bread bun and it was used for promotional activities around the USA. An original 1952 Wienermobile now resides at the Henry Ford Motor Museum in Michigan, USA. This is one of the oldest examples – if not the oldest example – of commercial custom cars and certainly the oldest sausage custom car.
