The longest-running railway series in a magazine is "Practice & Performance" in The Railway Magazine, published by Mortons Media, Horncastle, UK, which first appeared in the September 1901 issue and is still a feature of the current magazine.

Each month, an in-depth analytical article showing a record of train performance for a selected route is published. This respected series has had only nine contributors since its inception in 1901. One author, Cecil J. Allen contributed every month for 47 years (January 1911 to December 1958). The series has appeared in every issue except one – there was an edition in the 1930s when compiler Cecil J. Allen wrote a piece that was critical of locomotive engineer Sir Nigel Gresley, then went on holiday. The editor was a friend of Gresley and withdrew the story. Allen was not happy when he got back, but the magazine had been printed and the chain broken.
