The first backflip landed in a Surfing World Championships event was achieved by Gabriel Medina (Brazil) at the Oi Rio Pro in Barra de Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 14 May 2016.
Medina received a perfect 10 for the trick, which is thought to be the first backflip landed in any surfing competition.
When he was just 18, in 2012, Medina stunned Hawaii with a backflip during warm-ups – something both Tim Curran and Flynn Novak had done before. Nearly four years later, he managed to replicate the feat in competition.
