Unsurprisingly, there have been very few shooters based on comic characters, given that most superheroes rely on their special abilities to combat evil. However, the first shooter videogame based on a comic hero is The Punisher, an Operation Wolf-style rail shooter published by LJN for the NES on 3 November 1990. Marvel's The Punisher, aka Frank Castle, is a vigilante and former US marine who has no super-powers, instead relying on a large arsenal of firepower and his formidable fighting skills. MicroProse also released a separate The Punisher game in 1990 for 16-bit computers, which featured gallery-style shooting sections.

The first superhero FPS videogame was X-Men: Ravages of Apocalypse, released for the PC in 1997.
