According to Pollstar's annual Top 100 tour list, the best-selling circus show in 2016 was Cirque du Soleil's (Canada) "Toruk – The First Flight", with estimated takings of $66.6 million (£54.1 million).

There were 293 performances of "Toruk" in 44 cities across the year and it's estimated to have sold 957,446 tickets worldwide.

The second highest-grossing circus show of 2016 was "Varekai", also by Cirque du Soleil. It earned $53 million (£43 million) as estimated by Pollstar.

"Toruk – The First Flight" is based on characters and creatures from the highest-grossing movie of all time: Avatar (2009).
