The Llanos de Moxos is a tropical floodplain of about 150,000 square kilometres (57,915 square miles) overall consisting of savannahs that alternate between seasons of drought and flood, and is situated in north-eastern Bolivia. The Ramsar Convention is named after the city of Ramsar, Iran, where the convention was first signed in 1971.
Each year, World Wetlands Day is marked on 2 February.
Another large savannah floodplain in South America is the Llanos del Orinoco (Venezuela and Colombia), which is also about 150,000 km2 in size and that experiences as much as 105,000 km2 (40,540 sq mi) of flooding during a given year.
