Grecia the toucan was rescued by farmers and brought to the ZooAve animal sanctuary in Alajuela, Costa Rica, on 7 January 2015 with half of his beak missing. Thanks to fundraising efforts, which included crowdfunding and the help of US and Costa Rican companies, Grecia was fitted with an 18-g full-length prosthetic beak around 19 cm long. Since his operation, in January 2016, Grecia can now feed himself and preen his feathers normally. He began singing again just a few days after receiving his new beak.
