In 2012, experts from Reef Arabia, a consortium consisting of Sustainable Oceans International, DShape and 3D software specialist James Gardiner (Australia), sank two 3D-printed coral reefs off the coast of Bahrain. Weighing 1,100 lb each, these artificial reefs are made from non-toxic patented sandstone-like material designed to be more attractive to coral larvae and other marine creatures. The 3D-printed reefs are pH neutral, unlike traditional concrete artificial reefs.
