The 2016 League of Legends World Championship, held from 29 September 2016 to 29 October 2016 in the USA, stumped up a massive $5.07 million – more than double the prize pool of any previous LoL tournaments. For the first time in the competition's history, players contributed to the pool by buying in-game items, mirroring the way in which the Dota 2 tournament The International is funded. The top prize of $2,028,000 was won by the South Korean team SK Telecom T1, who defeated fellow countrymen Samsung Galaxy 3–2 in the final.
As of 9 November 2016, the tournament had the fourth highest prize pool in eSports overall – behind the aforementioned The International of 2014, 2015 and 2016.
