Venus Williams (USA) had taken part in 93 Grand Slam singles tournaments – the most-ever by a woman or man – as of her first-round defeat at the US Open on 30 August 2023. The former world No.1 (b. 17 June 1980) burst on to the Grand Slam scene as a 16-year-old at the 1997 French Open and won seven major singles titles (Wimbledon in 2000–01, 2005 and 2007–08; US Open in 2000–01) from the 16 finals she contested. Her most recent appearance – aged 43 years 74 days – was as a wildcard at her home Grand Slam, losing 6–1, 6–1 to Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen in her 100th career singles match at Flushing Meadows.
In 2023, Williams made her 24th appearances in the singles main draw at both Wimbledon (1997–2012, 2014–19, 2021 and 2023) and the US Open (1997–2002, 2004–05, 2007–20 and 2022–23).
She played her 356th Grand Slam match at the 2023 US Open – moving ahead of Martina Navratilova’s career total of 355 – but could not add to her 271 victories (90 at Wimbledon, 79 at the US Open, 54 at the Australian Open, 48 at the French Open).
Overall, Williams has won 49 of the 83 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) finals she’s contested, winning 818 of the 1,094 matches she’s played.
