At the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, Andy Murray (UK) became the first player – man or woman – to win two Olympic singles gold medals after successfully defending the title he won on home soil at London 2012. Murray defeated Argentina's Juan Martín del Potro 7–5, 4–6, 6–2, 7–5 in a strength-sapping final on 14 August 2016, with the South American becoming one of only seven players in Olympic history to win a second singles medal after his bronze at London 2012.
Charles Winslow (South Africa, 1912–20), "Kitty" McKane Godfree (UK, 1920–24), Steffi Graf (Germany, 1988–92), Arantxa Sánchez Vicario (Spain, 1992–96), Elena Dementieva (Russia, 2000–08), Fernando González (Chile, 2004–08) and Juan Martín del Potro (Argentina, 2012–16) have, like Murray, won two Olympic singles medals.
Tennis was included at the Olympic Games in 1896–1924 and again from 1988 onwards. It was a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984.
