The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing with its rotors tilted upwards. While in flight its rotors can tilt forward allowing the aircraft to reach speeds of up to 565 km/h, much faster than a conventional helicopter. Its complex design led it to be under development from 1981 until its final operational evaluation in 2005. It entered US military service on 13 June 2007. The Osprey has a maximum, fully loaded vertical take-off weight of 52,600 lb and is mainly used by the US Marine Corps and the US Air Force.
