On 5 October 2016, South Africa and Australia contested a One-Day International (ODI) at Kingsmead in Durban, South Africa, in which the four opening bowlers conceded a combined total of 325 runs in 39 overs, or 8.33 runs per over. South Africa's Dale Steyn (2 for 96 from 10 overs) and Kagiso Rabada (1 for 86 from 10 overs) and Australia's Chris Tremain (1 for 65 from 10 overs) and Daniel Worrall (0 for 78 from 9 overs) established the unwanted record in a game that saw South Africa reach their target of 372 with four balls to spare – the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.

Kingsmead's batting-friendly contest smashed the ODI record for runs conceded by opening bowlers by 27 runs. On 18 January 2015, South Africa hosted the West Indies at New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in a match that saw the opening bowlers (Jerome Taylor and Jason Holder for the Windies and Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander for South Africa) flayed to all parts of the ground for an aggregate of 298 runs, also in 39 overs. Taylor and Holder suffered the most, conceding 95 and 91 runs, respectively.

Between them, the opening bowlers at Kingsmead conceded 35 fours and 10 sixes. Steyn alone leaked nine fours and five sixes, and the 96 runs he gave away proved to be the most expensive bowling display by a South African in ODIs (beating Wayne Parnell's 95 runs against India in Gwalior on 24 February 2010).

The highest successful run chase in an ODI involved the same teams and produced the same result, with South Africa (438 for 9) beating Australia (434 for 4) with 1 wicket and 1 ball to spare at New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 12 March 2006.
