The largest pig genus is Sus (housing the typical pigs or wild boars), which contains 10 modern-day species. These include not only the very familiar Eurasian wild boar S. scrofa, which is the direct ancestor of the domestic pig, but also some little-known island species from Asia, including the Palawan bearded pig S. ahoenobarbus, the Visayan warty pig S. cebifrons and the Mindoro warty pig S. oliveri.
For many years, only two exclusively Asian species of wild pig were recognized – the bearded pig and the warty pig. With the advent of DNA analyses and other genetic testing techniques, however, it was recognized that one of the bearded pig's subspecies, the Palawan bearded pig, was sufficiently distinct genetically to warrant elevation to full species status in its own right, and that the warty pig was actually a collection of at least seven distinct species, each requiring official recognition as such, and so has been split accordingly by modern-day taxonomists.
