The lightest of the four species of peccary alive today is the collared peccary or javelina Pecari tajacu, native to the southern USA, Mexico, the isthmus of Panama, Trinidad, and northern South America. As an adult, it can weigh as little as 14 kg but no more than 31 kg. Its shoulder height is 30–50 cm, its body length is 80–105 cm, and its tail length is 2.0–4.5 cm. Its legs are relatively short.
True pigs (i.e., belonging to the taxonomic family Suidae) are native exclusively to the Old World in the modern age; any living wild in the New World have been introduced here. Their ecological niche here is instead occupied by the peccaries or South American pigs, which belong to a separate but closely related taxonomic family, Tayassuidae.
