At the conclusion of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), Virat Kohli (India) had scored 8,661 runs in 259 innings for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Just eight other men had reached 5,000 IPL runs up to and including the 2025 tournament, led by Rohit Sharma (7,046 runs, 2008–25), Shikhar Dhawan (6,769 runs, 2008–24) and David Warner (6,565 runs, 2009–24).
At the 18th time of asking, one-team man Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally got their hands on the winners’ trophy when they narrowly defeated Punjab Kings by six runs at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, on 3 June 2025. Kohli top-scored for Bengaluru with 43.
In 2016, Kohli was named player of the tournament and received the Orange Cap for hitting 973 runs in 16 innings during the ninth season of the world's premier T20 competition. To this day, it remains a record runs tally for any IPL season. Kohli also has the most hundreds (8) and the most fifties (63) in tournament history.
As leading run-scorer, Kohli won the Orange Cap again in 2024, making 741 runs in 15 matches. After finishing fourth in the league stage in 2024, Bengaluru made the play-offs but lost to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator.
Kohli captained Bengaluru for 11 IPL seasons (2013–23), winning 66 of his 143 matches in charge. He was runner-up on three occasions (in 2009, 2011 and 2016), and finished third three times (in 2010, 2015 and 2022).
Royal Challengers Bengaluru were known as Royal Challengers Bangalore from the inaugural IPL tournament in 2008 until 2023.
Kohli made INR21 crore ($2.5 million; £1.8 million) from his participation in the 2025 IPL.
