The largest species of conure is the mitred conure Psittacara mitratus. Native to forests and woodlands in Peru, Bolivia and Argentina, this predominantly green-plumaged parakeet measures up to 38 cm long, due in part to its relatively long tail. It was traditionally housed in the "true" conure genus Aratinga, a name meaning "little macaw", as conures do look like miniature macaws, but following a major study in 2013 it and several other conure species were moved to a separate, closely related genus, Psittacara.
In addition to its native South American distribution in the wild, this species has also established various naturalized populations in three states of the USA, originating from the successful, continuing breeding of escapee or released pets. These populations occur in Hawaii, and also in Florida and California on the US mainland.
