Mohammad Khalvandi (Iran) threw 46.12 m to win gold in the final of the men's javelin competition (F56/F57) at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 12 September 2016.
The previous record was held by Mohamad Mohamad (Syria) with a throw of 44.00 m. Mohamad came 10th in the Rio final, throwing a season's best 32.72 m.
Khalvandi beat his Iranian compatriot Abdollah Heidari Til in the final. Heidari's personal best of 43.77 m was good enough to secure the silver medal.
In the same competition, home favourite Claudiney Batista dos Santos (Brazil) set a new world record in the F56 class, finishing fifth with a throw of 42.74 m.
Khalvandi also won gold at London 2012, throwing 50.98 m in the combined F57/58 class on 8 September. Due to rule changes in seated class F57, including the removal of the F58 class, records achieved up to the end of 2013 were frozen by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on 1 January 2014.
The F57 class is for athletes with "impaired muscle power, limb deficiency, impaired passive range of movement and leg length difference".
