Julio César Chávez was a multiweight champion. Before these consecutive defences he was WBC super featherweight champion and WBA lightweight champion. He also fought world title fights at welterweight.

Chávez lost his super lightweight title to Frankie Randall by split decision to end his streak but would regain it four months later in a rematch by technical decision.

He defended the title four times before losing to Oscar De La Hoya in 1996.
