In July 2009, the first giant panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca cub successfully conceived through artificial insemination using frozen sperm was officially confirmed by Chinese scientists. It was born on 23 July 2009, at 7.41 am, in southwestern China's Sichuan Province, and was the third cub born to an 11-year-old female called You You. The successful conception utilised a process for freezing sperm in liquid nitrogen that had originally been developed back in 1980. Moreover, the success was seen as an answer to the problem of lessening panda semen availability, which had been leading to inbreeding among captive pandas.
