The most Olympic gold medals in the 4 x 100 m relay is 3 and was achieved by Frank Wykoff (USA) who won the race in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1928; Los Angeles, USA, in 1932; and Berlin, Germany, in 1936.

Wykoff was the first runner in his quartet in 1928, and ran the anchor leg in both 1932 and 1936. On all three occasions, the United States equalled or broke the current 4 x 100 m relay world record, setting times of 41.00 sec, 40.10 sec and 39.8 sec, respectively.

In 1936, the US team included Jesse Owens, widely regarded as one of the greatest track and field athletes in the history of the sport.

The United States dominated the Olympic 4 x 100 m relay event between Antwerp, Belgium, in 1920, and Melbourne, Australia, in 1956, winning eight consecutive finals. (The Olympic Games did not take place in 1940 and 1944 due to the outbreak of World War II.) The event was first held at the Olympics in 1912.

Wykoff shares the overall (men and women) 4 x 100 m relay record with Evelyn Ashford, who won three consecutive Olympic gold medals with the United States team in 1984-92.
