Opened on 24 March 2016, Galactica at Alton Towers theme park in Staffordshire, UK, is the first flying rollercoaster combined with virtual-reality technology as standard for all riders. The seats are fitted with Samsung Gear VR headsets that transport the wearers into space. Each headset is individually synced to the twists and curves of the track, meaning every rider experiences a seamless simulated voyage through the cosmos regardless of their position in the car.

Prior to its public opening, Galactica was first tested by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield who described the ride as the closest he has come to a virtual trip across the universe.

Galactica was adapted from a previous rollercoaster at Alton Towers called Air, which operated from 2002 to 2015.
