On 28 June 2013, Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada was declared a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Covering an area of 44,807 km², the Preserve is the largest national park in Canada. Dark Sky Preserves implement policies to protect the night sky from light pollution in order to prevent disruption to the diurnal cycles of plants and animals, as well as allowing people to see the night sky without the dimming caused by light pollution.
