On 2 September 2015, an international team of scientists led by Yale University, USA, published the results of their survey of global tree numbers. As of September 2015, there were around 3.04 trillion trees on Earth, approximately equal to 422 trees for each human being. Human activity currently destroys around 15 billion trees each year. The results of the survey also suggests that, since the beginning of human civilisation, Earth has lost nearly 46% of its trees, leaving today’s world as the least forested it has been in recorded history.
